Coretta Scott King is Simply Beautiful

There are so many wonderful things to say about Coretta Scott King.  Not only was her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a great man, but she was also a phenomenal woman.  She was a devoted wife, mother, civil rights leader, and service oriented woman.

My sister realizes that some of the best gifts to give my kids are books and she gave us a great one yesterday. She presented my daughter with the most beautifully illustrated book about Coretta Scott King, Coretta Scott by Ntozake Shange and illustrated by Kadir Nelson.

The book Coretta Scott, displayed in the living room.

Coretta Scott King is a perfect woman to feature during Black History Month.  The 2013 theme from The Association for the Study of African American Life and History  is The Crossroads of Freedom and Equality:  The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington

What activities and lessons do you have planned for
Black History Month??

I've created a Black History Month Activity Set.  Please stop by my Teachers Pay Teachers store to check it out.  Click on either image below to hop on over to my TPT store.

Books,A Bookshelf, & Black History Month

My sweet little aunt found the perfect bookshelf to go with my daughter's room.  It matches her toddler bed and her drawer set.  She said it was a great sale going on at JC Penney's and she just had to get it.  I loves me some Penneys. The shelf is too too cute!!  Most importantly, my husband put it together right away.  I couldn't wait to get the books on there, I don't even want to mention what I had been using to store her books.  I won't even go there.

Now I can arrange the books like a bookstore or library and change them out with the season or select a theme.  I'm so excited !  For the rest of this month I'll display some of our Dr. Martin Luther King books and next add in books that celebrate Black History month.

February is around the corner and it's time to celebrate Black History, which is American History.

Black History Month is a time to celebrate and recognize the contributions of those from the African Diaspora. Black History Month celebrates African Americans and other diverse cultural leaders, inventors, heroes, sheroes, scientists, researchers, musicians, athletes, and more that have achieved milestones and made contributions to the world.

I've created a Black History Activity Packet and I hope it is a great addition to your classroom lessons for the month of February. Please stop by my Teachers Pay Teachers store to check it out.  Click on any image below to jump over to my store.

Dr. King Trade Books

As promised, here is one of my favorite trade books about Dr. King.  I've also included my favorite model (my daughter) to show-off "My Uncle Martin's Big Heart" by  Angela Farris Watkins.  This book is written by the niece of Dr. King.  She shares some special moments about the influential and charismatic leader.

Freebie - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - Activity Set

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will forever be remembered as a morally courageous person.  His leadership, vision, and perseverance will thankfully live on and be remembered on the third Monday in January, each year.  Fortunately, he is also remembered and celebrated throughout the year for his impact on the 1964 Civil Rights Act and determination to advance equality around the world.

Please stop by my Teachers Pay Teachers page and use the activity set to remember a great man in history and a man that will continue to have a profound impact on our future!

MLK Day Activity Set

Some of the most beautiful trade books have been about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  It's obvious the authors and illustrators have a passion for spreading the legacy of this great man. I'll share some of my favorite trade books that I've collected over the years in my next post.  Also, I'll create a freebie activity set that can be used to celebrate and remember Dr. King.

Trade Book Finds

This is one of my favorite books to read with my three year old daughter, Little Miss H.  It reminds me of how much she LOVES her DADDY!  To get some of our favorite books, we usually have to shop online.

I usually find the books on some of my favorite blogs and then search for them on Amazon.  Usually, the local book stores never have them in stock.  However, when I've asked them to order the books, they have always done so.  It depends on who will have the best price after adding on the shipping fees from Amazon.

Where is your go-to place to find children's trade books for your little ones? Here are some popular places:
